Introduction

Library and electronic resources in training practices

  1. We recognise that most of the resources used by trainees are now in an electronic format. This influences how we share that information. The library and collection of electronic links needs to be a “thing” i.e. an easily accessible shared list of recommended links that trainees are aware of that covers clinical areas and local and national guidance that is kept up to date and easily accessible from any computer.
  2. There are still some areas where books are essential – these are likely to include consultation books, exam books, areas such as leadership, ethics, statistics. Where a library contains a lot of older texts, we suggest they are removed or archived, and a small clearly labelled section of recommended books is made available, with opportunity to purchase up to date books where needed.
  3. Suggested websites/links and books are listed below

It is expected that a training environment will have a library resource with some representation from each of the different areas listed below.

Not all the books or resources need to be present. The trainer should be aware of this list and decide what the most appropriate resources for their learning environment are.

These may be as a physical text or as an online resource with the password if needed remembered in the browser. Online resources are clearly preferable in most circumstances.

The GP school would also like to see the educational resource develop into a multidisciplinary learning resource with the inclusion of resources for nursing, pharmacy and allied health care colleagues.

Journals for the last 2 years such as the BJGP, BMJ and AiT should also be accessible; if online the learner should not use other individuals log on details.

For those who feel that it is also useful to have ready reference to clinical areas, there is a general list of clinical books that many GPST’s find useful.

In addition to this reading list, we expect  that you will create a folder containing links to significant resources for learning on the desktop.
