Supported Return to Training (SuppoRTT)

SuppoRTT in the North West

Welcome to the Supported Return to Training (SuppoRTT) pages for NHS England in the North West.

SuppoRTT is a national programme designed to improve the experience for all postgraduate doctors and dentists who have been out of training for 3 months or more.

Many postgraduate doctors and dentists take time out of training for a number of reasons which can often vary in duration. This can include; parental leave, OOPs, career breaks, carer's leave and sickness.

NHS England understands that regardless of the reason, returning back into training can be a challenging and stressful time for a postgraduate doctor / dentist. However, you are not on your own; NHS England, your School and your host Trust are here to support and guide you through this process.

This short video has been created to help understand the SuppoRTT programme:

Building a more SuppoRTTive Culture

People working across the NHS have participated in a film which is focussed on creating a positive culture for medical trainees as they return to training after time away.

NHS England's Director of Workforce, Training and Education, Dr Navina Evans and NHS Chief People Officer, Prerana Issar, are among the contributors, sharing their views on promoting a supportive culture for returning trainees, alongside people from across the health sector including current trainees, consultants, academics and other NHS leaders.

This new Building a More SuppoRTTive Culture eLearning module explores the significance of organisational culture in shaping the experience of postgraduate doctors in training returning to work after a break and offers guidance on the measures that individuals can take to bring about positive culture change. This will create an NHS in which its staff can thrive and that is safe for the patients it serves.
