Associate Dean - Hospital and Community Care

Graduated from the University of Manchester with a MBChB (Honours) degree in 1996. Attained MRCP UK in 2000 and became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, London (FRCP) in 2011. Specialised in Nephrology and developed a sub-specialty interest in Lupus Nephritis. Undertook a research project examining the Role of Transforming Growth Factor Beta-1 in Lupus Nephritis from 2003-2006 and this work was funded through a Wellcome Trust Fellowship. Successful completion and obtained a PhD from the University of Manchester in 2006 with a number of publications and presentations at National and International conferences. Obtained prizes for best abstract at the European Lupus Conference and British Society of Rheumatology conferences in 2005 and was awarded the Orthobiotech Bursary for the best abstract at the American Society of Nephrology conference in 2006. Specialist training in Nephrology completed at the Yorkshire Deanery in 2007. Appointed as a Consultant Nephrologist at Manchester Royal Infirmary since 2007.


Since taking up the consultant post, I developed an increasing interest in Medical Education. Appointed as Renal Training Programme Director for the North West Deanery in 2012. Appointed as Royal College Tutor and Lead for Education for the Division of Specialist Medicine at Manchester Royal Infirmary in September 2013. Recently, appointed as an Associate Regional RCP Advisor for Training in July 2015.


Completed Masters in Medical Education in December 2014 and obtained a distinction for my dissertation work looking at the Value of Workplace Based Assessments in Predicting Doctor’s in Difficulty. This work has been presented and well received at National and International meetings and published in Medical Education.


I am also a Senior Lecturer for the University of Manchester and teach regularly on the MSc Medical Education, Rheumatology and Nephrology programmes as well as supervise both MSc and PhD students as well Medical Education Fellows.


I was appointed as Postgraduate Associate Dean for Health Education England North West (HEE NW) in October 2015 and have been in post since January 2016. In addition to my patch and school responsibilities, my portfolio responsibilities include leading in educational research and scholarship. We have developed an educational research strategy in line with national priorities and linked it with the national Research and Innovation strategy. We are currently mapping the educational research activity across the North West and are identifying themes of research to develop a more collaborative and programmatic approach to educational research.


I was appointed as Clinical Lead for Quality Management for the Joint Royal Colleges of Physicians Training Board (JRCPTB) in September 2016. I am currently working on the State of Physicianly Training report and aim to publish this in mid-2017.
