Medical Leadership Fellowship - Research

Health Education England, North West’s (HEE NW) Medical Leadership Fellowship (MLF) is a two-year programme designed to facilitate the development of trainees who have specific interest in medical leadership and aspire to be a future leader.

One component of the fellowship is a research project. The MLFs are required to design and implement a quality or service improvement project. Below you can find the details of the projects the current cohorts of MLFs have completed or are undertaking. Should you like to know more about any of these projects, e-mail england.facultydevelopment.nw@nhs.net and a member of the team will put you in contact with the relevant MLF.

Medical Leadership Fellow: Daniel Finn

Project Title: Development of a prescribing bundle for systemic therapies in Oral Medicine

Trust: Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

Project Supervisor: Dr B.P. Rajlawat, Specialty Lead and Consultant in Oral Medicine

Project Team: Emma Lorimer (DCT3 in Oral Medicine) was involved in data collection

Project Synopsis: The project involved an audit of current prescribing and monitoring practices for commonly used systemic therapies, against pre-determined standards. Following this, prescribing checklists were developed for both drug initiation and monitoring. These have now been implemented and a re-audit is planned to assess the effectiveness of these. This project has led to additional initiatives including establishing a specific drug-monitoring telephone clinic. Future plans include the utilisation of shared-care within the Pan-Mersey region and expanding the initial audit into a national QI project through our specialist society.
