Health Education England North West Medical Education Fellowship

The Health Education England North West (HEE NW) Medical Education Fellowship (MEF) is a two-year programme designed to facilitate the development of trainees who have specific interest in medical education and aspire to take up a lead educator role in the future.
The fellowship enables individuals to experience a range of education development opportunities which include a period of academic study and undertaking an educational project / audit. Throughout the course of the fellowship, and beyond, MEFs are encouraged to observe, experience, and reflect on the educational activities they engage in.
It is hoped that by stimulating interest in medical education during training, individuals will go forward with the skills and motivation to take up valuable educational / supervision roles within their workplace. One of the main objectives of being an MEF is to help to foster a culture of teaching excellence and learning in the clinical workplace.

Programme Components
Academic
In addition to their eligible year funded module(s), medical education fellows will be supported to complete up to two further modules to achieve the full PG Cert in Workplace based Medical Education.
Education Project
MEFs will be expected to design and implement an educational project. This can either be one of their choice or one selected from projects commissioned by senior education faculty based either at HEE NW or locally by the DMEs. The educational project is in addition to any annual audit/QI project required as part of the specialty curriculum requirements.
Vocational
MEFs will be required to attend up to two HEE NW development days per year of the fellowship; they will also be able to access relevant HEE NW development opportunities which could include:
- Observing an ARCP
- Attending and presenting a poster at the HEE NW Annual Conference
In addition to the more formal elements of the programme, MEFs are encouraged to develop their educational portfolio and CV and seek opportunities to engage with clinical teaching and supervision of students and junior doctors in the workplace. They should also seek opportunities to shadow people in senior educator roles e.g., TSTL, DME, Royal College Tutors and to observe educational meetings.
Further Information
MEFs remain in their clinical training placements for the duration of the fellowship. Please note, participating in the programme does not lead to an extension of CCT date.
Initially, MEFs are offered a tenure of one year with a second year granted on evidence of satisfactory progression in the role.
