Training Programme
The Area
The Central School covers the central, northern and western districts of the Greater Manchester conurbation & the towns of Bolton and Wigan to the north & west of Manchester. The area has excellent recreational and leisure amenities. Manchester and its satellite towns are renowned for their rich and diverse cultural activity, sporting amenities and lively nightlife. The Lake District, Derbyshire Peak District and Snowdonia National Parks are all within easy reach as are the coasts of North Wales and Lancashire.
The area has excellent transport links, being adjacent to the M6, M61 and M62 motorways. London is 2 hours by rail from Manchester and there are frequent services to most major cities. Manchester Airport, 8 miles to the south of the city centre, is the busiest UK airport outside London and is a major international hub.
Postgraduate Training
Manchester is a major university city. The Medical School of Manchester University is located next to Manchester Royal Infirmary close to the city centre. Training in anaesthesia is supervised and planned by the Anaesthetic School Board responsible to the Postgraduate Dean. All hospitals within the School have active postgraduate centres with modern library facilities.

The Training Scheme
The scheme provides successful applicants with a comprehensive anaesthetic experience to fulfil the curriculum of the Royal College of Anaesthetists for CT1/2 Training and to prepare the trainee for the Primary FRCA examination.
New starters will spend CT1 in one hospital. It is expected that the Primary MCQ will be passed during this year. CT2 is spent in a different hospital. At the end of CT2 the trainee is expected to have passed the primary FRCA , gained their Basic Level Training Certificate and be eligible to apply for ST3 jobs.
The Northwest School of Anaesthesia organises all aspects of the education and exam practice programme for all CTs. This is detailed on the NW Anaesthesia website (www.nwanaesthesia.org.uk/) but consists of 10 weekly new starter tutorials, nine 2-day tutorial blocks, 5 stand alone one-day courses, a 3 day MCQ practice course and a 2 day OSCE/SOE exam practice course. Weekly half day tutorials also take place every Tuesday afternoon at North Manchester General Hospital. Attendance is mandatory & a register is kept.
Trainees will be expected to travel to other hospitals within the School for tutorials; the school however is unable to reimburse travel expenses.
All trainees will have a nominated educational supervisor and College Tutor in each placement who will be responsible for their induction, appraisal and assessment. Registration with the Royal College of Anaesthetists is essential after appointment. Trainees will be required to maintain a logbook in a format approved by the Royal College and a training e-portfolio as required by the Deanery and the School. The Royal College of Anaesthetists has ‘Competency Based Training’ for Speciality Trainees. Training will thus be directed toward attainment of all the necessary competencies in order to ensure that CT1/2 training is complete.
