Core Psychiatry Training
Introduction
The NHS England North West (formerly Health Education England) School of Psychiatry consists of over 250 Core Training posts across the North West, incorporating Cheshire and Merseyside, Manchester and Greater Manchester and the Lancashire region. Having undergone an expansion of the number of posts provided in the North West region in August 2024, further expansion is planned for August 2025.
Within the training scheme provided by the NHSE NW School of Psychiatry, there are three rotations - Mersey and Cheshire, Manchester, and Lancashire. Each training scheme has a wide range of posts to prepare Core Trainees for Higher Training in their preferred specialty and ultimately to be a competent Consultant Psychiatrist.
The North West region offers Core Trainees opportunities to pursue a career in academic psychiatry, research, teaching, and in leadership.
Core Trainees are expected to rotate through different specialties of psychiatry and to work in different mental health trusts to gain experience in a range of different clinical settings. The training posts provided will allow trainees to meet the requirements of the approved core curriculum for specialist training in psychiatry. The three-year Core Training programme (longer if a trainee wishes to work less than full time) involves rotating between six-month posts in the following subspecialities:
CT1s will usually remain in the same mental health trust, but not necessarily in the same locality for the full 12 months as a CT1 (e.g. Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust incorporates Liverpool, South Sefton, Southport, Warrington, St Helens, Knowsley, Runcorn).
The first 18 months of Core Training will usually involve spending 12 months in General Adult Psychiatry (six months in inpatient and six months in a community setting) and six months in Older Adult Psychiatry.
The remaining 18 months of Core Training will involve a trainee doing at least one developmental post, either in Psychiatry of Intellectual Disability or CAMHS. In the final 12 months of Core Training, trainees are encouraged to do a more specialist post, e.g. in liaison psychiatry, on the Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit, with the CRHTT, or in perinatal psychiatry.
CAMHS run-through Specialist Trainees are required to do two CAMHS posts; one of which must be in a liaison setting.
Training Locations
Cheshire and Merseyside
The Mersey and Cheshire training scheme incorporates three mental health trusts:
Core Trainees will be expected to rotate through at least two of the mental health trusts over the course of their three years of training.
Along with providing excellent training opportunities in a range of clinical settings, Liverpool is a bustling city that is rich in culture.
Its maritime heritage overlooks the River Mersey, where you can ride a ferry or visit the stunning Albert Dock and visit one of the city’s many museums.
Liverpool is host to a rich music scene with many venues to visit, along with a wide range of restaurants, shopping and leisure facilities, including Liverpool One.
The city of Liverpool boasts two Premier League football teams. But crowning it all are the residents of the city. Liverpudlians (or “scousers” as they are called) are some of the friendliest, most down-to-earth, people you are ever likely to meet, with a great sense of humour.

Manchester also has a number of free museums and galleries including the Lowry, Imperial War Museum and Museum and Science of Industry.
Manchester United and Manchester City Football Clubs are both celebrated worldwide and with one of Britain’s only cycling velodromes, Manchester is the place to be for world-class sport and opportunity.
Manchester also boats Europe’s largest indoor arena, regularly playing host to the world’s best artists.

Lancashire Scheme
Lancashire and South Cumbria NHS Foundation Trust is a small but reputable region that offers trainees a wide breadth of experience during their 3 years of Core Training.
South Cumbria is a brilliant place to live and work. There is stunning countryside and lots of outdoor activities in the mountains and lakes of the Lake District National Park and the coastal regions.
There are pretty villages and lively towns such as Kendal, Ulverston and Barrow-in-Furness, with affordable housing, good schools, and entertainment such as cinemas, theatres and live music.
Cities such as Carlisle, Lancaster, Manchester and Liverpool are accessible from the M6 and the West Coast Main Line train services.
We are a welcoming and friendly group of psychiatrists, so come and join us for your core training in South Cumbria.
