Higher Psychiatry
Introduction
The Health Education England across the North West (HEE NW) School of Psychiatry consists of over 180 Higher Training posts spread across Cheshire and Merseyside, Greater Manchester and Lancashire.
There are over 100 training sites that trainees can rotate to.
Each region has a wide range of posts to prepare trainees to be an excellent Consultant Psychiatrist.
We also offer opportunities for those who wish to pursue a career in academic psychiatry, research, teaching and leadership.
Trainees will be expected to rotate through different specialties and Trusts to gain experience in a wide range of clinical situations. The posts within it, taken together, will allow trainees to meet the requirements of the approved higher psychiatry curriculum.

Along with the excellent training opportunities, Liverpool is a bustling city that is rich in culture.
Its maritime heritage overlooks the River Mersey where you can ride the famously sung about ferry or visit the stunning Albert Dock and visit one of the city's many museums.
Liverpool is host to a rich music scene with many a venues to visit, along with a wide range of restaurants, shopping and leisure facilities.
There are also two Premier League football teams. And crowning it all are the residents. Liverpudlians are some of the friendliest, most humorous people you're ever likely to meet.

Greater Manchester and Lancashire Scheme
On the Greater Manchester and Lancashire Scheme there are 4 Mental Health Trusts:
Manchester is now England’s second city, renowned for its passions for art, shops and boutiques.
Manchester also has a number of free museums and galleries including the Lowry, Imperial War Museum and Museum of Science of Industry.
Manchester United and Manchester City Football Clubs are both celebrated worldwide and with one of Britain’s only cycling velodromes, Manchester is the place to be for world-class sport and opportunity.
Manchester also boasts Europe’s largest indoor arena, regularly playing host to the world’s best artists.
Lancashire is a small but reputable region that offers trainees a wide breadth of experience during Training.
Lancashire has much more to offer than cobbled streets and cotton mills. Explore the area and you will find so much – from historical Lancaster to the up and coming city of Preston and not forget Blackpool and its world famous illuminations and tower than only Paris can rival!

Greater Manchester and Lancashire Scheme
Child and Adolescent Psychiatry is a 3-year single CCT programme.
HEE NW has 29 training posts, including Academic Trainees and dual training opportunities in Forensics and Psychiatry of Learning Disabilities.
Those trainees undertaking dual training will require a 5-year training programme.

Forensic Psychiatry is a 3-year single CCT programme.
HEE NW has 16 training posts, including Academic Trainees and dual training opportunities in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Those trainees undertaking dual training will require a 5-year training programme.

General Psychiatry is a 3-year single CCT programme.
HEE NW has 79 training posts, including dual training opportunities in Medical Psychotherapy and Old Age Psychiatry.
Those trainees undertaking dual training will require a 4-year training programme if training in Old Age and 5-years if Medical Psychotherapy.

Medical Psychotherapy
Medical Psychotherapy is a 5-year dual CCT programme. HEE NW do not offer any posts leading to a single CCT.
HEE NW has 4 training posts in Medical Psychotherapy.
Trainees are expected to complete 3 years within Medical Psychotherapy and 2 years in General Psychiatry.

Old Age Psychiatry is a 3-year single CCT programme.
HEE NW has 30 training posts, including dual training opportunities in General Psychiatry.
Those trainees undertaking dual training will require a 4-year training programme.
