Medical Training Initiative Programme (MTI)

General Information

The Medical Training Initiative programme was organised and made operational a few years ago to enable International Medical and Dental graduates to gain experience and training in the NHS. They are allowed a maximum of two years stay in the UK before returning to their home country.

These doctors and dentists will be placed in a post that does not affect the training opportunities of those trainees who are on an approved training programme in the specialty and the Trust. The post should provide the training that is relevant to the specific learning needs of the doctor/dentist and has approval of the College and specialty. The employing Trust is responsible for the completion of the required application process.

Full details of the application process and the online application form are available on the AoMRC website by clicking here.

DEANERY APPROVAL

NHS England approval for an MTI post can be obtained prior to an applicant being appointed.  This is valid for 6 months and should expedite the process once an applicant has been appointed to a post.

Please complete the online application form for NHS England approval available on the AoMRC website by clicking here.

The online form gives the option to upload supporting documents.  Please ensure you upload the following:

  • Job description
  • Example timetable
  • A statement from the Training Programme Director confirming that the post does not disadvantage UK trainees nor adversely affect the training of existing trainees in the training location and provides sufficient educational and training content.

If you have any queries about the process of obtaining Deanery approval for MTI posts, please contact: england.mtiplacementsnw@nhs.net
