Training Programme Information

The NWSOR is split into 3 main training sectors (Mersey, Lancs & Cumbria and Manchester) – you will state preferences of sector on Oriel when applying for ST1 which will be confirmed on successful application. Once selected, there is usually little flexibility to move/swap sectors until ST4 when undertaking subspecialty training, so please ensure you are prepared to commute to placement sites within the selected sector. There is one recruitment intake per year in August.

* Paediatric and Neuro sub-specialty training sites

Manchester has been split into East/West sectors, however due to expansion Manchester placements may be across the Manchester/Pennine sites.

Rotations occur every 6 months based at any training site within the allocated sector. There may be educational reasons to be based at another site and will be discussed if required.

ST1 Placements include 1 x 4 month teaching rotation at Edge Hill University, Ormskirk for all sector trainees.

In ST2/ST3 there will be 2 month rotation blocks to accommodate core paediatric and neuro training, with the additional 2 month block within a general or other sub specialty placement.

Additional Information for Prospective Trainees

Interventional Radiology including neuro interventional training posts are allocated to HEE NW trainees only, we do not accept competitive recruitment outside of the programme.

To be considered for a HEE NW training post after ST1 prospective trainees must apply through an Inter-Deanery Transfer: https://nwpgmd.nhs.uk/Inter_Deanery_Transfer

Regional Teaching

NWSOR has G Suite for Education which houses all teaching. On entering the programme trainees will be given a dedicated NWSOR.CO.UK email and G Suite access for the following:

  1. ST1 trainees will have a 4 month non clinical face to face teaching placement at the Edge Hill Radiology Academy. FRCR Part I Physics and Anatomy Teaching is weekly.

  2. ST2 – ST4 – Online fortnightly core curriculum teaching including focused preparation on the FRCR Part 2A

  3. ST4 – ST5 – Online scheduled VIVA exam practice in preparation for the FRCR Part 2B

  • Regional teaching opportunities organised by NW training sites and consultants will often be free or discounted to NWSOR trainees

ARCP

The RCR uses Kaizen ePortfolio. Trainees can access the ARCP requirements using their NWSOR personal log in to access the Shared Drive. The RCR 2020 curriculum will commence from August 2021, and trainees will be required to evidence the requirements for ARCP for the stage of training.

The main ARCP panel is in Summer, with two adhoc panels in Spring and Winter for trainees out of sync to the August - August academic year.
