Inter Deanery Transfers

There are two IDT Application Windows per year:

- Application Window 1 - FEBRUARY for IDT start dates in August of the same year

- Application Window 2 - AUGUST for IDT start dates in February of the following year

Inter Deanery Transfer application window timelines can be found here.

The national process has been established by the Conference of Postgraduate Medical Deans (COPMeD), Health Education England (HEE), Northern Ireland Medical & Dental Training Agency, NHS Education for Scotland, Wales Deanery and the British Medical Association (BMA) in order to provide a consistent, robust and transparent process for allowing trainees to transfers around the UK. This centralised transfer process aims to provide trainees and regional colleagues with a consistent, transparent and robust service. For this reason, it will not be possible to depart from or be flexible with the published processes, timelines and criteria.

The national Inter Deanery Transfer (IDT) team cannot accept any applications or facilitate any transfers outside of the process or nationally agreed timelines. There are no exceptional circumstances where the national IDT team will accept any late applications or facilitate a transfer outside of the nationally agreed process.

Eligibility Criteria Change For Transfers Between British Countries

Postgraduate Doctors and Learners can now move between any of the Nations on an ARCP Outcome 1, 2, or 3.

Due to recent legislation changes on Immigration, trainees on a Tier 2 visa are now eligible to apply between Nations. Please seek advice from the relevant National Sponsorship team when applying for an IDT.

Criterion change from August 2022

From August 2022, COPMeD, with support from the BMA and sponsorship from Health Education England (HEE), Northern Ireland Medical & Dental Training Agency (NIMDTA), NHS Education for Scotland (NES) and Health Education and Improvement Wales have approved the addition of Criterion 5 for which trainees will be able to apply for a transfer.
Under Criterion 5, trainees are not required to demonstrate any change to personal circumstances and therefore an IDT can be requested for any other reason that is not covered by Criterion 1-4.
To apply for an IDT under Criterion 5, trainees are not required to provide any supporting documents or personal evidence. However, the mandatory supporting documentation is required in order for the application to be deemed eligible.

If you would like to apply for a inter deanery transfer, it is important that you read the Inter Deanery Transfer information on the national website to find out about the process, eligibility criteria and application requirements.
