North West Postgraduate Medical and Dental Education

North West Core Surgical Training

The purpose of Core Surgical Training is to allow the resident doctor to develop the basic and fundamental surgical skills common to all surgical specialties, together with a few specialty-specific surgical skills.

Core Surgical Training in NHS England – North West is divided between two sectors and each have their own Training Programme Director. Please select one of the following for further information on each sector:

Core Surgical Training Teaching Programme

Attendance at teaching is mandatory and resident doctors are required to attend a minimum of 70% (8 full teaching sessions).

Core Surgical Training Teaching Dates 2024/2025 added 28 May 2024

All teaching sessions will be 8.30am – 4.30pm unless otherwise stated. Teaching will be a hybrid programme with mixture of virtual and face to face sessions.

Essential Surgical Skills Workshops (CST1/ST1) Monday 20 August 2024
Tuesday 21 August 2024
Mandatory for CST1/ST1 doctors to attend.
Doctors will be allocated to one of the two days by the CST Coordinator.
Human Factors Workshops (CST2/ST2) To be confirmed
6 sessions over the 12 months
Mandatory for CST2/ST2 doctors.
doctors initally offered choice to select date before being allocated by CST Coordinator.
Anatomy Bootcamps To be confirmed
3 sessions over the 12 months sheduled one month prior to MRCS Part B/DO-HNS
Mandatory for CT1/ST1 with places available for CT2/ST2 doctors who have not completed MRCS Part B exam.
CST Trauma Course Monday 31 March 2025 Optional sign up course. Priority for CT2/ST2 who have not completed ATLS.
