Course Aims: Effective communication skills within medicine - or in life generally - are crucial for any successful interaction with people. This programme explores the possibilities of advanced communication within a healthcare setting.
Course Objectives: By the end of this programme, delegates will be able to:

• Name 5 barriers to effective communication and how to have a strategy to overcome them
• Recognize the 7 ways to influence others, knowing when and when not to use each one
• Know the 4 styles of personalities and how to deal with them, understanding how opposites need behavioural strategies
• Name the percentages used in the TRIAD
• Name your assertive rights
• Discover how assertive you are and the differences between aggression, passivity and assertiveness.
• Deal with conflict and understand how transactional analysis can assist
• Name three ego states and how to recognize them
• Explore how to really listen effectively. Generally, in life people hear but do not really listen – those that do really listen will have an advantage.
• Consider how different people take in information and relate to different Communication Styles. To understand the different styles allows us to use the appropriate Style to relay the message effectively.
• Keep a record of their learning experiences so that learning points can be reflected upon and referred to after the programme.
• Have the opportunity to prepare a detailed Action Plan which sets SMART objectives, activities with timescales. Together with the Record of Learning and the Action Plan, a method of transferring learning back to Professional Life is available.
